An investigation has begun into how an Air France A380 crashed into a smaller plane at JFK airport, New York.
The superjumbo, the world’s largest jetliner, clipped the tail section of the Bombardier CRJ jet as it taxied to its gate. The Delta Comair plane was spun 90 degrees on the tarmac as a result of the collision.

The incident was captured on video by a passenger on another flight at JFK Airport in New York.

None of the 520 people on the A380 or the 62 on the Bombardier plane were hurt.

Eye witnesses said they saw damage to one of the wings of the A380 which has been taken in for inspection. The passengers were re-routed, and an investigation launched.

Air France flies five times a day to New York including one flight using the Airbus double-decker.

An Air France spokesman said: “Air France confirms an A380 operating flight 007 on April 11 between JFK and Paris-Charles de Gaulle, with 495 passengers and 25 crew on board, struck with its left wing the tail of a Comair CRJ-700 which was parking at JFK.”

“This collision caused only material damage. The two aircraft have been immobilised and the passengers were given accommodation or placed on (other) flights.”

Air France operates four Airbus superjumbos in its fleet. It is due to take delivery of two more A380s in coming weeks and plans to add Washington, Montreal and San Francisco to its A380 network that includes New York, Tokyo and Johannesburg.

Pretoria – As of Thursday new procedures for US visa application with lower fees for applicants will come into effect, the US Embassy said.

The two changes will come into effect for non-immigrant visa interviews which will result in fewer fees for applicants.

Applicants will no longer have to pay or buy a pin number to make an appointment for a visa interview and successful applicants can pick up their visas for free at a pre-selected DHL location. However, applicants will retain the option of paying DHL for home or office delivery, or paying for expedited delivery to a DHL office.

The embassy said under the new system, applicants must first complete an online application at http://southafrica.usembassy.gov/non-immigrant_visas.html after which they must pay an application fee at an ABSA bank branch. Applicants must first obtain a preprinted special deposit slip, visit http://southafrica.usvisa-info.com or call the call center (080 098 0444 or 021 300 9700).

Applicants must then make a visa appointment either online at http://southafrica.usvisa-info.com/ or by phone at the same numbers.

“The change in visa fee collection applies only to non-immigrant visa applicants. Persons applying for immigrant or fiance visas will continue to pay fees at the US Consulate General in Johannesburg using the existing application process,” said the embassy’s Elizabeth Kennedy Trudeau.

Those who booked before 7 April but have an appointment between 7 April and 30 April 2011 will be contacted regarding their payment options.

The embassy added that only the non-immigrant visa appointment system and the location for non-immigrant visa fee collection are changing. All other requirements relating to eligibility and documentation for US non-immigrant visas remain unchanged.
